TONG Kam ting
I often create a series of themed landscape and figure paintings by reflecting on the relationship between man and nature, so as to get closer to the balance between the soul and material desires. Human life is constantly changing with the rapid development of technology and urbanization. Although people are becoming richer and more stable, they are indeed exhausted physically and mentally. Inspired by my father who was a local typesetting printer for 30 years, I have recently attempted to combine ink painting with letterpress printing and rubbings, hoping to find new forms of expression through studying the possibilities between ink printing, rubbing and painting. For instance, I would include rubbing portraits to my paintings, and those images appear repeatedly with subtle differences that contain my helplessness and uncertainty toward the rapid change of the times. I use the reproducibility of prints to symbolize the seemingly unique but yet unique nature of today's mechanized mass production. Meanwhile, I am also interested in exploring how to closely connect my artworks, exhibition spaces and viewers through using elements such as the theme, form and display of the paintings. Life may be tough with repeated cause and effect, in which people are continually making choices between endless desires and peace of mind, and therefore I intend to transform the sentiments into the spiritual and poetic scenery in the painting. It is hoped that viewers can seek relaxation and enjoyment from the painting as well as its setting. I was born in 1990, currently living and working in Hong Kong.
